Western Electric Ivory Model 302 H1 TelephoneFully Operable
Mfg. 4/1941
Up for auction is this wonderful EARLY 1941 302 Western Electric Telephone in Ivory.
1941 is the 1st year for the color impregnated thermoplastic (Tenite) housings.
Although ivory was the favorite color of phone when colors were introduced, the early 40's models were rare because WWII caused a back log of over 2 million unfilled phone orders until after the war. After a short production run in 1941-42, 302 colored thermoplastic telephone production was suspended until 1949 when production resumed.
These earliest thermoplastic 302's differ from the post-war color phones in that;
-The plungers are the same color as the shell instead of clear,
-The handset is solid, rather than hollow,
-The threads for the caps are the same as those on black phones, instead of courser,
-The plastic dial is thicker, and
-The handgrip cup is painted metal instead of plastic like the rest of the shell
The 302 was designed by Henry Dreyfuss, who also designed locomotives, vacuums, tractors and the 500 telephone to name a few.
I have been researching the 302 in ivory thermoplastic and the earliest example I could find was from 5/41. I am not an expert but this particular 4/41 phone could be of the earliest in ivory thermoplastic.
This phone is unrestored and unlike many others suffering from the moderate to extreme spider cracking, this one has minor incidence as seen in the pictures. No Chips, Cracks or Breaks!
Handset is the F1 with the receiver stamped 4/30/41 and the transmitter stamped 4/41 as seen in last pic.
Along the inside edge of the back of the housing it is stamped H1 in red which is the mounting code and can also be seen in the last pic. The screw driver in the last pic was used to support the receiver for a picture and is not included.
This beauty also has the ivory thermoplastic plungers which I have never seen on an ivory 302.
47" cotton jacketed handset cord with rare ivory coiled protective cover
66" cotton jacketed wall cord with anti pull-out hook and 3 wire hook-up (red, green yellow with original fork-spade terminal connectors)
